RVBY – 'if you're not writing from the heart it's simply not you'

By Run That Again

We’re excited about this artist – RVBY’s sound reminds us of the likes of Sigrid, particularly ‘Hanging On’, one of her earlier tracks which has now amassed a near 200k streams already.

And now, her latest song ‘Red Light’ hits us with a unique production value and a vocal feel like a Sabrina Carpenter record. We sat down to chat all things music with the Bristol-based artist Ruby Donadel, aka RVBY.

You can listen to Red Light here.

What do you think, in your opinion, makes a great song?

“Raw and honest lyrics that are carried by a rhythm that also speaks for itself!”

We love your recent release Red Light, tell us about the process of writing it and what it's about?

“Thank you so much! I wrote Red Light the day after my last single Wildfire was created! It is about the same topic, just delivered in a different way - I like to call it my alter ego song! Where Wildfire portrayed this sense of innocence around falling in love with someone, Red Light shouts my feelings from the rooftops with all the more sass and truthfulness.”

Best piece of advice you have received so far musically?

“If you’re not writing from the heart it’s simply not you and people will know that.”

You're based in Bristol - would you say that has had an influence on your music?

“Bristol has had an influence on my music in the sense that this is where i was born and raised so most of the stories in my music were lived here. During my time as an artist i have experienced travelling to so many different places including the hearts of many cities and places. These places are where i have met other artists, collaborated and absorbed things to put into my music.”

Favourite pastime when you're not making music/ How have you been keeping busy during lockdown?

“I have always loved art and spend many of my days painting and illustrating! I also love fashion and photography so try to make sure I get up each day and have fun with my makeup looks and clothing choices - to keep my sanity - I also love to make and sell jewellery! Beaches are my happy place too, I love swimming in the ocean so, since we’ve been allowed to, i’ve enjoyed a good swim and surf as well as the feeling that comes with it!”

Has anyone been negative about your desire to pursue music?

“I’m so lucky to have a supportive circle around me, and i’ve had that my whole life. Whatever i’ve wanted to do at any time, and this has always constantly changed, my family have supported me in every sense. They know i’ve found my heart with music and i’d say they’re proud and believe in me entirely!”

What's your goal for this year?

“To be happy, content, free and creative!”
