Katus Myles is an alternative R&B rapper, with a real sultry tone to his Lo-fi magic.

His recent track Ouu Oui instantly hits you with some off-the-wall sampling, a unique production factor, and something lulling and emotional but also perfectly restrained in his flow. This is a pattern in all his tracks so far and we recommend you check out ‘Another Winter Song’ for it’s soulful energy and catchy melody.

We sit down for a quick-fire Q&A with him, an artist we’re tipping as one to watch for this year.

How would you describe your sound and who are your favourite artists and influences?

'“It’s a bit of a tricky one describing my sound, it’s kind of in that middle ground between new school RNB and rap. I more try to generate a feeling from my music then a sound. I know it’s made for the night-time, that’s for sure. I take influence from a lot of artists, from Frank Ocean, to Drake to PARTYNEXTDOOR, some their songs have been a soundtrack to my fondest memories.”

When did you decide to pursue music as a career?

“I never really decided it, music was never in my plans. For some years I wanted to go into fashion as a career, even creating a brand with my friend called ‘Hoodlum Street Code’ (it’s still going now you should check it out). But with both my parents travelling the world touring from Gospel music, plus uncles and older cousins (shout out Sillkey) all being involved with music, it was kind of inevitable that i’d eventually pursue it at some point. I guess it all changed when I decided to make an EP for my girl, which didn’t and would never come out aha.”

What are your goals for this year?

“I haven’t announced it yet but I’m planning on dropping a project during the summer which I’m super excited for. It’s a real step up from the music I dropped last year, so I can’t wait to give that to the world. I also plan to put a lot more time into producing for other artists around me that I admire and just collaborating a bit more.”

What are you most proud of so far in your music career?

“I think it would probably be dropping my first song, people didn’t know me for making music, so it was nerve wracking to put that side of myself out there, not just my peers but the world to hear. It’s not even just about the opinion that people will have about the track, it just lets you know what I’m doing is real, this isn’t just for fun anymore. All the time spent learning how to make my beats and all the takes I took, to get that perfect sound was worth it. I lowkey turned my phone off when I dropped the first snippet of the track (Dark nights) aha.”

Best piece of advice you have ever received?

“Erm, it would probably be, to do what makes me happy, and not to weigh my value you solely on the opinion of others.”

[Amy Winehouse’s] music is timeless I remember having a crush on her as a kid without even knowing what she looked like. She was a special one.

What’s the worst thing people tell you about the music industry?

“Making bad deals, I’ve heard a lot about people finding themselves in bad positions due to a bad deal being made, trying to be smart about those deals and not rush into stuff. And not really tbh, I guess I’m lucky I’ve had a good amount of support from the people around me. My younger brother is definitely my biggest critique though, but also my biggest supporter as he likes to say. He’ll be in my corner when I send him songs, either saying that’s the one or you got a drop that track and come harder.”

If you could collaborate with any artists in the world, who would It be and why?

“I would have loved to collaborate with Amy Winehouse (R.I.P), her music is timeless I remember having a crush on her as a kid without even knowing what she looked like. She was a special one.”

What’s one surprising thing about you people may not know?

“Hmm, I think I’ll try to keep it a surprise aha.”

What’s your favourite snack and why?

“Definitely curiously cinnamon cereal. Sit down, eat that out of the box (with no milk of course), a BIGGA fruit punch on the side as a drink. Sensational that’s all I can say.”
